(1894-1955)
   political figure
   Born in Guérigny, Marcel Déat was elected a Socialist (SFIO) deputy in 1932 but left the party shortly afterward to found the reformist Socialist Party of France. Air minister in 1936, he was reelected deputy in 1939, and supported a policy of compromise with Germany ("Should we die for Danzig?" was an article that appeared in L'Œuvre, the newspaper that Déat directed after 1940). The founder, in February 1941, of the Rassemblement national populaire, a fascist and collaborationist party, Déat joined the vichy government as secretary of state in 1944, but took refuge in Italy, where he died, after the Liberation.
